Frk. Jacobsen at work baking her famous 'kringle'
in the kitchen at Kalkgaarden, situated in the country side
approximately 30 km from downtown Copenhagen

Thru all these years our 'home away from home', when we were out on the roads roaming the Danish country side, was the Kalkgaarden run by the charismatic Ms. Lisbeth Jacobsen, known as Frøken Jacobsen (pictured above ca. 1992), who has been at the helm since 1927, serving coffee and cake. Frk. Jacobsen, who will be celebrating her 94 years birthday in February of 2002, is still going strong, but alas decided to discontinue her roadside coffeehouse in 1999, only receiving personal friends and family. Luckily a few of us are considered friends and are always invited inside for a chat and a cup of coffee.
(Frk. Jacobsen was singing soprano with Københavns Kammerkor (Copenhagen Chamber Choir) for many years and was a student of Professor Grossman in Vienna.)
KALKGAARDEN is honorary sponsor of team Sabines under the motto:
"Coffee for 2, 'kringle' for 4 and sugar for 6"

On Sunday February 10th, 2002 I went for a ride to see frk. Jacobsen, now approaching 94. She was, as always in great spirits, and gave me the above picture of herself in front of a painting of her (from the forties) by her life-long friend, painter Lars Svane, who recently died, and proudly presenting her Brazilian Christmas cactus (from 1905) in full bloom. She graciously allowed me to post this beautiful picture on my site. (Taken by one of her 'unge piger' around Christmas in her last season as inn-keeper 1998-1999.)
On Monday 17th of March 2003 frk. Jacobsen celebrated her 95th birthday receiving friends and family in the kitchen of her home. The Mayor was there, with flowers of course, but was sent away by a furious frk. Jacobsen after he brought up the subject of a planned motor freeway through the beautiful countryside of 'Mølleådalen'.
On Tuesday 17th of March 2004 frk. Jacobsen celebrated her 96th birthday receiving riders from the team Sabines, where she is honorary sponsor. Sports director Ib Skovgaard, team captain Kenneth Heiberg, assistant sports director Erling Kroner and Bob Rockwell III arrived after a beautiful ride through the countryside, baked by the sun and 17° C, the first real spring day. Frk. Jacobsen was beaming with delight and offered Master Brew, which was politely declined and changed to three Schweppes and a glass of water. The beautiful white Hortensia flower was transported from nearby Farum by Captain Heiberg who was also graciously allowed (a rare occurrance) to take two pictures, supplied beneath alongside a picture of the 'Fan-Club' and two shots en route of Rockwell and Kroner.
